It started in 1960 when Redken was founded on scientific principles and the entrepreneurial spirit of American actress Paula Kent. Paula was highly sensitive to the products used by hairdressers and make-up artists so she worked with her friend and stylist Jheri Redding (creating the name "REDKEN") to formulate gentle yet high-performance haircare products. Redken was the first manufacturer to apply protein and moisture to dramatically improve weakened and sensitized hair and restore strength and shine. Built on this heritage, Redken’s pioneering research has led to the most advanced products in the professional industry.
Nearly 50 years later, the company’s foundation is still based on extensive scientific knowledge and the belief in, and support of, the expertise of the salon professional. Redken is committed to help every salon professional “learn better, earn better and live better” and supports this goal not only with innovative products, but also with the inspiration provided by award-winning education programs. The Redken Exchange, the industry’s leading resource for learning, the Redken Symposium, the largest single-manufacturer educational event, and a complete platform of programs take a personal-based approach that can only be found with Redken.
Our strength in fashion was solidified in 1993 when Redken made the move to New York City. Located in the fashion capital of the world, Redken is at the forefront of the trends, creativity and dynamism of this great city. Our headquarters on 5th Avenue has also allowed us to align with the fashion world. As a result, Redken has become a leader in backstage beauty, sending a team of artists to fashion week in New York, Milan, Paris and London to create runway looks for the industry’s most prestigious designers including Versace, Calvin Klein, Prada, Gaultier and Marc Jacobs.
